Student Facilities

  • The Sussex campus is like a large village, with everything you need for day to day life. This includes a library, bank, post office, GP surgery, dentist, and pharmacy as well as numerous cafes, bars and restaurants and a weekly food market.
  • The Library is open 24 hours a day during term time. Recently refurbished to an exceptional standard, it contains a vast collection of resources to support your study and also gives you access to over 38,000 online journals and 52,000 e-books.
  • The Library’s Special Collections are housed at a purpose-built historical resource centre called The Keep, located just a short walk from campus and within easy reach of Falmer Station and local bus stops.
  • The Special Collections include original manuscripts and first editions by Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen and Rudyard Kipling; The New Statesman Archive; and the Mass Observation Archive – a unique social history resource.
  • IT Services provide several computer cluster rooms across campus, many with 24-hour access – in addition to free or discounted software, IT training courses, and a drop-in IT service desk. The campus is wi-fi connected, with free email, file store and internet access.
  • The Student Life Center plays a key role in ensuring that Sussex is a supportive and empowering environment for students. It is a ‘one-stop shop’, offering information system and support to students throughout their studies on a range of subjects including academic issues, funding queries and personal difficulties.
  • The Student Support Unit offers specialist advice and guidance to any student with a long term condition such as a physical disability, long term mental health condition or specific learning difficulty such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia.

Students’ Union

  • Our active Students’ Union represents students’ interests both within the University and the wider community and campaigns on relevant local, national and international environment issues.
  • The Union runs two lively bars on campus, plus one in the center of Brighton, –providing food, entertainment and a great place to catch up with friends. It also runs two campus shops; supports more than 200 student societies, sports teams and student media groups; and runs a variety of social events from Freshers’ Week onwards.

Recent/Prospective New Builds

  • A major new teaching and research center for the arts – the Attenborough Center for the Creative Arts – opened in 2016 providing a research and teaching base to support creative arts including film, media and drama. It is named after one of Sussex’s former Chancellors, Lord Richard Attenborough.
  • A key part of our current redevelopment will be a new biomedical sciences building to inspire a new generation of scientists. This will house the diverse disciplines that make up the School of Life Sciences and will also include an expansion of our world-leading Genome Research Center.
  • We are currently planning the creation of a new student village on campus. This will include new high-quality housing to accommodate our growing student population as well as a purpose-built Students’ Union building – providing spaces for studying, performance, meetings and socializing.
