Unit 27 Network Operating Systems

Unit 8 Computer Systems Architecture

Teaching and Learning Activities

The module tutor(s) will aim to combine lectures with tutorial activities. This environment will provide opportunities for the student to understand the course material through case study and text and to apply it in a practical way. The intent is to facilitate interactive class activities, and discussion about the significant role of research in a global and local business environment.

2.3       Teaching Ethos

Unit 8 Computer Systems ArchitectureThe college’s approach towards teaching and learning is simple and effective. The main aim of UKCBC is to assist learners in maximising their potential by ensuring that they are taught clearly and effectively. This will enable students to engage in the learning environment and promote success in both their academic studies and subsequent career.

2.3.1 Methods of Delivery:

LECTURES:

These will be developed around the key concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content and will use a range of live examples and cases from business practice to demonstrate the application of theoretical concepts. This method is primarily used to identify and explain key aspects of the subject so that learners can utilise their private study time more effectively.

SEMINARS:

These are in addition to the lectures. The seminars are designed to give learners the opportunity to test their understanding of the material covered in the lectures and private study with the help of reference books. This methodology usually carries a set of questions identified in advance. Seminars are interactive sessions led by the learners. This method of study gives the learner an excellent opportunity to clarify any points of difficulty with the tutor and simultaneously develop their oral communication skills.

CASE STUDIES:

An important learning methodology is the extensive use of case studies. They enable learners to apply the concepts that they learn in their subjects. The learners have to study the case, analyse the facts presented and arrive at conclusions and recommendations. This assists in the assessment of the learner’s ability to apply to the real world the tools and techniques of analysis which they have learnt. The case study serves as a supplement to the theoretical knowledge imparted through the course work.

Plagiarism:

Any act of plagiarism will be seriously dealt with according to the colleges and awarding bodies’ regulations. In this context the definition and scope of plagiarism are presented below:

Plagiarism is presenting someone’s work as your won. It includes copying information directly from the web or books without referencing the material; submitting joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student’s coursework; stealing coursework form another student and submitting it as your own work.Suspected plagiarism will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt with according to the college procedure. (For further details please refer to the plagiarism policy and the student code of conduct.)

Assessment:

The module will be assessed meeting all the LO as specified by the awarding body, Ed Excel.

Please read the instructions carefully while addressing the tasks specified.

Contribution: 100% of the module

Assignment Brief and Guidance
You are employed as a network engineer by a high-tech networking solution development organisation and are working on a project for a local educational institution. You will need to analyse the specification from the institution below for completion of this project within a given timeframe:

The school comprises of 10 classrooms, 2 computer labs, a study room and a library. Each classroom has a PC needs to be connected to the network. Each Classroom also has a projector. The library is located at first floor and contain two PCs and a network printer. The two PCs should only be used to access the library database server of the library to search for books.

Each of the two labs contain the following:

o   25 PC for students.

o   1 PC for instructor.

o   1 projector

The school has 250 students, 20 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers including the head of academics and the programme manager, 3 computer network administrators. Each teacher and staff has separate computer and all share 3 printers situated in 3 different floors.

The school has 3 floors. All offices are located at the ground floor. All the classrooms are located at the first and second floor.  One lab located on the first floor and another located on the second floor. The main server for the network will be installed in a server room on the ground floor.

Your ISP has given you a IPAddress for your School.  You will need to divide your network into various sub networks to allow different functions to operate in various departments as below:

·         All the classrooms are on their own sub network.

·         Each of the two computer labs should be on its own sub network

·         Marketing, administration staff and network administrator should be on the same subnetwork.

·         All the teachers’ and higher managers should be on the same sub network.

You are required to design the network in simulated environment, write the documentation according to the tasks mentioned below and submit it in report format style to the head of academics of the school.

Part 1 Design efficient networked systems

1.      Prepare a written step-by-step plan of how you are going to design a Local Area Network including a blueprint of your LAN.

2.      Justify your choice of devices for your network design.

3.      Produce a test plan to evaluate this design for the requirements of bandwidth and cost constraints as per user specifications.

4.      Justify the security requirements and quality of services needed for selection of accessories.

5.      Suggest a maintenance schedule to support the networked system.

Part 2 Implement test and diagnose networked systems

1.      Implement a networked system based on your prepared design.

2.      Conduct verification with e.g. Ping, extended ping, trace route, telnet, SSH, etc.

3.      Record the test results and analyse these against expected results.

4.      Investigate what functionalities would allow the system to support device growth and the addition of communication devices.

5.      Discuss the significance of upgrades and security requirements in your recommendations.
