INTRODUCTION

Within an organisation, a range of business processes are functional at operational, tactical and strategic levels within the business structure. Some business processes are quite simplistic, especially at the operational level where routine, non-complex decisions and tasks are undertaken. However as you advance through the levels of an organisation, the strategic levels, more complex business processes and decision making is required that may need support from more automated, on-demand information systems and solutions.

Providing office solutions to support a range of business functions and decision making can range from the implementation of a simple rule or macro, through to the design of a more complex piece of code or program to support different end users.

This unit is designed to build upon existing skills and knowledge previously gained from using different types of application and design software. Learners will be expected to demonstrate more advanced business skills in terms of data manipulation, configuration, application and implementation of software packages to enhance a given business processes or processes.

On completion of this unit the learner should be able to use design application software at an advanced level of proficiency. Learners will engage with a range of software, and select the most appropriate application(s) to offer feasible and working business solutions.

Aim:

To equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to develop application solutions that can be used to automate business processes.

The module tutor(s) will aim to combine lectures with tutorial activities. This environment will provide opportunities for the student to understand the course material through case study and text and to apply it in a practical way. 2.3       Teaching Ethos

2.3.1 Methods of Delivery:

LECTURES:

These will be developed around the key concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content and will use a range of live examples and cases from business practice to demonstrate the application of theoretical concepts. This method is primarily used to identify and explain key aspects of the subject so that learners can utilise their private study time more effectively.

SEMINARS:

These are in addition to the lectures. The seminars are designed to give learners the opportunity to test their understanding of the material covered in the lectures and private study with the help of reference books. This methodology usually carries a set of questions identified in advance. Seminars are interactive sessions led by the learners. This method of study gives the learner an excellent opportunity to clarify any points of difficulty with the tutor and simultaneously develop their oral communication skills.

CASE STUDIES:

An important learning methodology is the extensive use of case studies. They enable learners to apply the concepts that they learn in their subjects. The learners have to study the case, analyse the facts presented and arrive at conclusions and recommendations. This assists in the assessment of the learner’s ability to apply to the real world the tools and techniques of analysis which they have learnt. The case study serves as a supplement to the theoretical knowledge imparted through the course work.

Futuretastic Theme Park

Futuretastic is a new theme park that is about to open situated between Birmingham and Coventry. Its theme will be ‘Future Technology’ and will be a mix of science fiction and real world developments in ICT and other technologies. Alison Smith, the Park Manager, has approached you to develop a range of products for the theme park.

Futuretastic requires a corporate identity logo. This logo will be used in a variety of situations. Alison Smith has provided the following requirement:

  • the logo will be created from scratch

Futuretastic has collected extensive data from prospective customers about their intentions when visiting the theme park.

These include:

  • expected arrival and exit times
  • when they prefer to eat
  • when in the day they anticipate they will be most likely to visit the different attractions in the park.

Table 3.1 shows a breakdown of the expected customer use of the theme park, per hour.

By combining this information with predicted information on the various attractions’ ability to process customers, John Jones, Operations Manager, is hoping to model park usage over the course of the first day of the theme park’s use. He will then be able to despatch clowns and mobile food stalls to the busiest areas of the theme park.

All calculations in the ‘Net Visitor Flow’ and ‘Total Visitors in Park’ rows must be 100% accurate and automatic. Futuretastic requires a visitor queue model showing the times of the day when the park attractions will experience excess demand across a one hour period.

  • The visitor queue model will be on a separate worksheet to the data from Table 3.1 and Table 3.2.

Futuretastic Theme Park

 Futuretastic is a new theme park that is about to open situated between Birmingham and Coventry. Its theme will be ‘Future Technology’ and will be a mix of science fiction and real world developments in ICT and other technologies. Alison Smith, the Park Manager, has approached you to develop a range of products for the theme park.

Futuretastic requires a corporate identity logo. This logo will be used in a variety of situations. Alison Smith has provided the following requirement:

  • the logo will be created from scratch

Futuretastic has collected extensive data from prospective customers about their intentions when visiting the theme park.

These include:

  • expected arrival and exit times
  • when they prefer to eat
  • when in the day they anticipate they will be most likely to visit the different attractions in the park.

Table 3.1 shows a breakdown of the expected customer use of the theme park, per hour.By combining this information with predicted information on the various attractions’ ability to process customers, John Jones, Operations Manager, is hoping to model park usage over the course of the first day of the theme park’s use. He will then be able to despatch clowns and mobile food stalls to the busiest areas of the theme park.

Q1 Use a computer and suitable software to enter the data from Table 3.1 and Table 3.2.Complete the Net Visitor Flow and Total Visitors in Park rows in Table 3.2 using formulae. Call the worksheet ‘Data’.

All calculations in the ‘Net Visitor Flow’ and ‘Total Visitors in Park’ rows must be 100% accurate and automatic. Screenshots annotated evidence of the formulae or functions you have used in these areas of the spreadsheet (including column and row headings e.g. A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 – if named cell ranges have been used they need to be clearly identified).

Futuretastic requires a visitor queue model showing the times of the day when the park attractions will experience excess demand across a one hour period.

  • As the information produced will represent visitors, all calculations involving visitors should be rounded up.
  • There is an assumption that visitors queuing will wait as long as necessary to access an attraction.
  • The visitor queue model will be on a separate worksheet to the data from Table 3.1 and Table 3.2.Table 3.3 – The operations manager has already sketched out an outline of how the ‘Futuretastic Visitor Queue Model’ will look:

Q2 Create a new worksheet called Model. Use a computer and suitable software to complete the Futuretastic Visitor Queue Model. Use the data from the Data worksheet to do this.

The array of figures on the Futuretastic Visitor Queue Model can be a little confusing at first glance. The Operations Manager has asked for help in quickly identifying problem areas around the Theme Park. He would like the Futuretastic Visitor Queue Model to automatically show the following formatting:

  • Areas with excess capacity should have a green background.
  • Areas with 1-49 visitors waiting in a queue should have an orange background.
  • Areas with 50 or more visitors waiting in a queue should have a red background.
  • A key should be provided to explain the significance of the 3 colours

John Jones, the Operations Manager, would like a new worksheet in your workbook where he can choose an attraction from a multiple choice list and view, for each hour, the queue size in a graphical format. Once he has chosen the attraction, a graph should be drawn below the multiple-choice list. The X-axis should be labelled ‘Time’ and the Y-axis ‘Queue’. A clear title showing which attraction the graph shows should also be included.

On opening the spreadsheet, the user should see a Welcome Page that will allow them to use buttons to access the:

  • Data worksheet
  • Model worksheet
  • Graph worksheet.
  • Include a short section of explanatory text next to each button explaining the function of the worksheet,
  • The user to the Welcome Page will have the logo in the top left corner and a title of ‘Futuretastic Visitor Queue Model’.
  • The user should be able to navigate back to the Welcome Page from the three worksheets.

P2.1 design a solution to address a business or user needs of Futuretastic Theme Park. For example end user requirements, systems requirement, application to automate procedures, designing a tool, program or package that can perform a specific task to support problem-solving.

End user requirements are given in task 2 from Q1- Q5.

P2.2 use advanced tools and techniques to implement a solution for Futuretastic Theme Park. For example, analyses of data with interactive Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts, linking Excel spreadsheets with Share point, team collaboration and document management with Windows SharePoint.

P2.3 test Futuretastic Theme Park solution against expected results. For example checking against requirements, error handling, documentation etc.

Task 3

Task 3 The objective for this task is to d demonstrate that business processes have been enhanced / improved .You are required to address the task as specified and research considering the given organization in your task2 to address the learning outcomes as specified

P3.1 discuss based on  Futuretastic Theme Park, ways in which end user engagement has taken place such as meetings, questionnaires, interviews ,etc.

P3.2 provide evidence that Futuretastic Theme Park business processes have been enhanced/improved such as more efficient, faster results, more user friendly, improved compatibility with other systems and processes.

P3.3 evaluate possible further improvements that could be made to enhance the system such as more user friendly, etc for Futuretastic Theme Park.

Assignment Guidelines: 

  • Use a standard report structure, Word-process the report and use Normal script of a proper font size 12.
  • Produce an academic report, detailing the above issues with a word limit of 4000 to 4500 words.
  • Complete the title page and sign the statement of authenticity.
  • The Assignment sheet should be attached in the front.
  • Submit the document in a folder in the form of a file as well as a soft copy on the submission date.
  • It should be uploaded on E-Learning platform before the deadline and submitted to ——– and sign the submission form of the college.
