Under this system of treatment each person is given personal attention and the counseling techniques are tailored in such a way that they are capable of meeting the individual needs and personal conditions. Integrative counseling considers that there are different ways to understand and deal with human psychology, there cannot be a single way to deal with the same(Sibbritt, 2015). The Integrative approach refers to combination of a human being’s behavior and requirements. It is directed towards integration of affective, behavioral, cognitive and psychological systems in a person at the same time addressing their communal and religious aspects.

Causes of Anxiety and Its Cure

The two types of anxieties that predominantly exist or in other words have been discovered today are normal anxiety and neurotic anxiety. Normal anxiety as the word suggests are normal in nature and can be controlled with proper mind set. The day to day happenings may create a barrier in one’s life yet that same barrier can be broken with a strong will. Hence Normal Anxiety is within our cognition and perceptiveness. On the other hand Neurotic Anxiety makes a total different sense altogether. It refers to a bigger aspect since at most cases it is avoided and suppressed. It is destructive in nature and has almost no good effect at all(Walburg, 2012).

People suffering from anxiety suffer from a number of issues in their daily lives. They suffer from mental pressure in almost every field; the symptoms include tiring easily, sleep disorders, fear, increased heart beat rate, sweating easily, shivering due to nervousness etc.

The main purpose of Integrative approach is to promote healing and dealt entirely taking into consideration people from different backgrounds (mental, physical and emotional health) are completely taken care of. The clients need to be clear and open in recognizing the factors leading to issues or problems in their life and responsible for causing concern at present. Instead of drawing any kind of opinion, expectation or attitude beforehand this approach helps the client to feel each moment openly and realistically(Yarnell, 2005). With the help of this approach the clients are realize the causes of disrupts their style of behavior and overcome fear and barriers to their psychological freedom. This approach helps the clients obtain control over their mind and body thus empowering them to set new goals and practice behavior which will enable them attain satisfaction and defeat their limitations.

The main focus of Integrative counseling is to discover experience of different clients which is considered as a phenomenological view of realism. It is the duty of an Integrative counselor to focus on these various issues and undertake specific techniques as an approach to resolve different issues of different individual clients in the most suitable way. The main purpose of Integrative counseling is to discover and understand the different ways in which human functions. There are several Integrative approaches to deal with anxiety of different clients depending on each of their problems. These include:

  • Humanistic Therapies
  • Psychoanalytical and Psychodynamic Therapies
  • Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies

Let us discuss how Cognitive and Behavioral therapies are helpful in dealing with anxiety. There are several therapies to deal with clients suffering from anxiety, but research has shown that Cognitive and Behavioral therapy is considered as one of the best ways of dealing with social anxiety disorders and generalized anxiety disorders. The Cognitive and Behavioral therapy was initially designed in order to deal with clients suffering from depression but now-a-days it is used to treat a number of mental disorders. The purpose is to solve currents issues and change obstructive behavior and thoughts. When an Integrative therapist starts dealing with a client having behavioral problems the first step that the therapist shall undertake is how to regulate behavioral functions and ways to minimize them(Diaz, n.d.). At this point the therapist might involve application of cognitive behavioral techniques in order to enable the client attain control over their functions before they proceed to the next stage of the therapy, which include bringing improvement, getting accustomed with the client’s behavior, sentiments and thinking.The Cognitive therapy examines the ways in which negative thoughts contribute to anxiety and the Behavioral therapy examines the ways in which one reacts in situations that leads to anxiety.

Anxiety affected people include the ones suffering from panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, incapacitating phobia or unrelenting worries. These problems can be treated with the help of certain types of therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. These therapies are considered very beneficial for anxiety struck people. These therapies help the clients control their level of anxiety, restrain them from worrying and help them defeat fear. It is a proven fact that anxiety is best treated with the help of therapy. The reason is that unlike medications for anxiety the therapy treats the problems rather than just the symptoms. The therapy helps the client reveal their worries and fears, observe situations in a new and less frightening way, help to relax and help to develop skill-set in order to cope up with situations in much easy way(Kaimal, 2015). It makes the client recognize the tools and learn how to use them for overcoming anxiety. Anxiety differs from person to person hence the therapy must be tailored in such a way that they are capable of dealing with each of the symptoms in the best possible way.

The main thing that Cognitive and Behavioral therapy relies upon is the way we think affect ones feelings. This means that it is not the situation that determines ones way of feeling but ones perception about the situation. This can be explained with the below mentioned example,

Situation: Mr. A, Mr. B and Mr. C are invited to a party of a friend.

Thought #1: I am very excited about the party as I love going out and interacting with new people!

Emotions: Happy, excited

Mr. B

Thought #2: I don’t like visiting parties. Instead I would like to go for a movie!

Emotion: Neutral

Mr. C

Thought #3: I am afraid of attending parties as I am not confident of myself or the way I speak. I would make a fool of myself if I visit.

Emotions: Anxious, sad.

Hence, it can be seen from the above example that different people seem to react in different ways in a given situation. The behavior of different people depends on their individual attitude, belief and expectations. Hence, for people suffering from anxiety, negative thoughts play a demotivating role which leads to fear and anxiety. The main purpose of the Cognitive and Behavioral therapy is to identify the negative thoughts and beliefs and clarify the same.  The motive of the Cognitive and Behavioral therapy is to change the pattern of thinking of the client so that his feelings can be changed.

The Cognitive and Behavioral therapies work in the following manner:

The first step involves identification of the client’s negative thought. This process involves the reasons which lead to irrational or fearful behavior. The therapist stresses on what the client was thinking while he felt irrational or behaved unusually(Martin, 2007).

The next step involves challenging the negative thoughts. In this step the therapist will teach the client how to evaluate the thoughts that leads to anxiety. The therapy involves questioning of the thoughts that lead to fear, analyze the unhelpful beliefs and test the reality behind the predictions considered as negative. The therapist makes the client undertake strategies that can challenge their negative thoughts through experiments, determining the positive and negative impacts of worrying or making them avoid the things they used to gat afraid of, etc.

The final step includes replacement of the negative thoughts with positive or realistic thoughts. Once the irrational predictions and negative distortions are discovered in one’s anxious thoughts they can be easily replaced with positive and realistic thoughts much easily(Meichenbaum, 1977). Thus, these new ideas and refreshing thoughts give a soothing effect to the overall thinking of the person.The following case study will help us understand how challenging the thought process in Cognitive and Behavioral therapy works.

Henry, a 26 year old male was self referred to a University Psychological Clinic for possible treatment for symptoms related to associate with anxiety. He lived alone and worked as a pert time cashier at a retail company and was a full time student at a local university. Henry’s presenting diagnosis was SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder).  Primarily the symptom was associated fear of others judging him negatively in social situations. According to him this feeling was affecting his life in a negative manner. He did not talk much during his classes at the university and would become anxious when the teacher would ask him question. The thought of making a speech publicly would make him too much anxious. The other complaint that Henry had was that he feared negative self-evaluation. He said he would become anxious with the feeling of other people viewing his hand-writing that seemed to be bad or illegible. According to him he felt that people would judge him negatively. According to him he did not have any academic problem during his childhood.

“According to Hoffman and Barlow (2000) SAD develops due to combination of biological and psychological vulnerabilities to anxious apprehension.” But in Henry’s case it was not clear whether he had any sort of biological predispositions to experience social anxiety and did not report any family history related to the same. But he said he was a shy and timid child during his childhood days.

The treatment of Henry was possible through CBT as it is considered as one of the best treatment for mental health and anxiety related problems. CBT is considered as the most effective treatment for SAD and this case study proves the same. In this case study the therapist of Henry did not have any past experience on manualized treatment. But this did not seem to create problem in his treatment. The case of Henry proves how combination of motivated patient and manualized CBT for SAD is helpful in quick recovery and sustained curing of symptoms.

Conclusion

Thus, it can be seen that instead of using too much of medication it is always preferred to go for an integrative approach in treating a patient with anxiety. Integrative Psychotherapy is the therapeutic approach that helps in upbringing of a person’s cognitive, physiological, mental, behavioural systems in a much natural and supportive way. This version of therapy includes family support, human touch, compassion and many more of those emotions that somehow makes the patient feel happier and that there are people by the client’s side. The main purpose of integrative therapy is to bring together various kinds of therapies together so that the pattern of treatment becomes easier and each client is treated as a whole and tailored treatment is delivered.
